Using short films and videos to build narrative empathy in the language classroom

Narrative empathy is the sharing of feeling and perspective-taking induced by reading, viewing, hearing, or imagining narratives of another’s situation and condition. In this practical session, we will examine how short films and videos can be used to build narrative empathy, and raise awareness of social issues in the language classroom. We will explore a number of practical, generic activities which foster both oral and written communication. Teachers will go away from the session with a better understanding of how to use short films and videos to build narrative empathy, raise awareness of social issues and a number of tried and tested activities.
