LanguageCert Interlocutor Training - International ESOL Speaking

Prospective LanguageCert Interlocutors should complete the following steps:

  • Step 1 and Step 2: Familiarise oneself with the LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking exams. This should take approximately 1 hour.
  • Step 3: Watch a training webinar which lasts approximately an hour.
  • Step 4: Complete the International ESOL Speaking exams Interlocutor Training Workbook. This is a 15-30-minute task.
  • Step 5: Prepare, conduct, and submit a mock interview. This should take 30 minutes to one hour (depending on the level chosen, the mock candidate, the reviewing required, and the quality of the recording).

 

All the relevant details regarding these steps are included below.

Step 1

Prospective Interlocutors are required to study at least one practice paper from each level to become familiar with the format and content of the LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking exams.

The LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking practice papers can be accessed here.

Prospective LanguageCert Interlocutors are required to study the Guide for Interlocutors.

Prospective Interlocutors are required to watch the following training webinar, which also introduces a Communicator level B2 mock interview.

Step 4

Prospective Interlocutors should complete the ‘Interlocutor Training Workbook’, a short online quiz. All answers to the quiz can be found in the Guide for Interlocutors or the CEFR document.

Please note: E-mail addresses are used to identify responses, so it is important that they enter the same e-mail in the quiz as the one they used in their application.

Step 5

All prospective Interlocutors should record and submit a mock interview. This recording will be used to assess their performance as an Interlocutor. It is important that prospective Interlocutors follow the procedure, as well as some useful tips included below, for recording and submitting a mock interview.

  • Select a volunteer to role-play the ‘candidate’ (their performance is not assessed).
    • Choosing a volunteer who is at or above the level you are conducting the interview will make your interview more realistic. If you have a very proficient volunteer, do a higher-level exam (e.g., C1-C2). In any case, try to conduct an interview at the level you expect you will be conducting most exams at.
  • Download a LanguageCert International ESOL Speaking practice paper and study the Interlocutor script.
    • Read the Specific Guidance and Advice in the Guide for Interlocutors for the level that is being examined.
    • Think of appropriate follow-up questions that may be required during the exam.
  • Prepare the exam space (paper, pencil/pen, recording equipment, timer) and make sure everything is working correctly.
    • Rehearse the exam with your volunteer.
    • Do not use a script for the mock candidate to read during the interview. It will feel unnatural and you will not be able to demonstrate your full skills.
  • Record the mock interview using a suitable recording device (recordings made with mobile phones are acceptable).
    • Listen to the recording and, if you think either the interview or the quality of the recording is not satisfactory, re-record the interview until you are happy with it.
  • Email an audio file of the recording to interlocutors@peoplecert.org, referencing the name, practice paper and level examined (e.g., PP2 Achiever/B1). Audio files must be submitted in either .mp3, .m4a or .wma formats. The recorded interview must be sent as one audio file containing all four parts of the mock speaking exam.

Next Steps

Prospective LanguageCert Interlocutors who submit their recording receive a feedback form with comments via email within five working days. 
 
‘To standard’ recordings

Prospective Interlocutors whose recordings are ‘to standard’ will receive their Approved Interlocutor Certificate and an automated link to register their credentials on LanguageCert’s Exams platform.

‘Below standard’ recordings

Prospective Interlocutors whose recordings are ‘below standard’ will need to submit a different recording, taking into consideration the comments outlined in the feedback form.
 
Please note that exams can only be conducted by Interlocutors who have successfully completed their training.
