During your Exam

What do I need to do on exam day?
  • You MUST arrive at the Test Centre at least 30 minutes before the exam begins.
  • You MUST bring the same photo ID you used to book your exam.
  • All details (names, date of birth, ID number, nationality) on your photo ID MUST match your Candidate Profile Details as used to book your exam.
  • Exam instructions will be provided at the Test Centre on the day.
  • Ensure you read the Summary of Exam Regulation.
What documentation MUST I bring to sit the exam?

You MUST bring the same photo ID you used to book your exam. You MUST ensure ALL your Candidate Profile details (names, date of birth, ID number, nationality) match identically to the details contained within the ID.

What do I do with my personal belongings during the exam?
Any personal belongings, such as bags, car keys and mobile phones, will be stored away in a locker during the exam process and are not allowed in the exam room.
Do I take all parts of my exam on the same day?
LanguageCert International ESOL SELT (Speaking & Listening) is a short session during which both skills are tested.

LanguageCert International ESOL SELT (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking) consists of two components, Written (Listening, Reading, Writing) and Spoken (Speaking). Exams can be taken independently, as long as they are taken within 14 days of each other.
What is SELT the exam format?

Depending on visa type, candidates are asked to take a two-skills (Speaking & Listening) or four-skills (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking) exam.

The LanguageCert International ESOL SELT (Speaking & Listening) exam is a short online conversation with a live interlocutor.

The LanguageCert International ESOL SELT (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking) exam consists of two components:

  • Written component (Listening, Reading, Writing), which is taken on a computer
  • Spoken component (Speaking), which is an online interview with a live Interlocutor
Are bathroom breaks allowed during an exam?
Bathroom breaks are only allowed during the Reading and Writing parts of the exam.
Is car parking available at the SELT Test Centres?
No, there is no car parking available at any of the SELT Test Centres. It’s important that you plan your journey in advance in order to arrive at the Test Centre at the specified time. If you will be driving to the Test Centre please make sure that you plan ahead to identify nearby car parks.

Can I bring a relative or a friend to the Test Centre?
ONLY candidates can attend the Test Centre. NO visitors are allowed to attend the Test Centre.
What happens if I have changed my name, and my name is different from the one on my identity document?

A test taker who has changed their name from the one in their identity document MUST PROVIDE ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATION IN THEIR NEW NAME. The following documents will NOT be accepted:

  • marriage certificate
  • UK spouse visa in a passport or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • original deed poll change of name document

Where a test taker does not have a valid identity document they should Contact the Home Office.

If a test taker has a previous gender (including a different name) that they do not want the test centre staff to see or for it to show on their test result, they should email sensitivebookings@homeoffice.gov.uk before booking the test.

How do I make arrangements if I require assistance on exam day?

If you require any form of assistance because of a disability for example, it is important that you contact our Customer Service team before booking your exam and we will endeavour to accommodate your needs. If you have already booked your exam, please contact Customer Service as soon as convenient.

Do I have to wear a mask during my SELT exam?
It is compulsory for everyone to wear masks at our global SELT Test Centres (including in the UK) for the foreseeable future. If you have a medical exemption, please contact our Customer Service team to discuss special arrangements.
