What documentation do I need to book AND sit a SELT exam?
You must have a valid form of photographic ID, such as:
- A Passport
- EU ID card
- Valid Travel Document (this does not include Emergency Travel Documents)
- Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)
- Biometric Residence Card (BRC)
- Government ID card (only accepted in the country it was issued in)
You MUST ensure ALL your Candidate Profile details (names, date of birth, ID number, nationality) match identically to the details contained within the ID.
Please note, you MUST bring the SAME photo ID on exam day.
Important update on Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs):
Use of both expired UK Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) and UK Biometric Residence Cards (BRC) as proof of identity documents will end in December 2026 following a 24-month extension. You may use an expired BRP or BRC to book your test if scheduled no later than 24 months after the expiry date printed on the card. Expired BRPs and BRCs will be accepted only until 31 December 2026. You must bring your expired BRP or BRC with you on the day of the test. eVisa is now accepted as a valid proof of identity for booking SELT tests in the United Kingdom. When using an eVisa, you must ensure your SELT test is booked at least 48 hours in advance of your intended test date.
What happens if I have changed my name, and my name is different from the one on my identity document?
A test taker who has changed their name from the one in their identity document MUST PROVIDE ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATION IN THEIR NEW NAME. The following documents will NOT be accepted:
- marriage certificate
- UK spouse visa in a passport or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
- original deed poll change of name document
Where a test taker does not have a valid identity document they should Contact the Home Office.
If a test taker has a previous gender (including a different name) that they do not want the test centre staff to see or for it to show on their test result, they should email sensitivebookings@homeoffice.gov.uk before booking the test.
